One Door. Many Stories.
Trust. Patience. Peacefulness. Those were the three things Anthony needed when he sought abuse counseling. While he had found peace in things like photography – “It became like meditation to me”- and early morning hikes, Anthony knew there were larger issues he needed help addressing. That’s what brought him to Reach Counseling Services. He was impressed the moment he walked in the door.
“Everything was calm, relaxed.”
“It was just what I needed so to talk about what had happened to me as a boy.”
“When I was 10 or 11, I was up north at deer camp, and a family friend did something to me that was very inappropriate,” Anthony explained. He admits that he had buried the things that happened for about 30 years. It was the watchful eye of friends that had him considering getting help.
“I had a couple of former coworkers that had been pushing me to talk to someone after they noticed that every November I freaked out,” he said. “They didn’t push me hard, but they were the most supportive.” Over time, their attentiveness made me recognize that I needed help. “Now that I’ve been through treatment, I have two stars tattooed on my arms for them.”
Anthony is quick to admit, though, that it wasn’t an easy process. “It’s a lot of hard work. You have to talk about bad stuff. But I’m so much better now. I’m more open. I talk to strangers. I should have done this many years ago.” It actually taught me a lot about who I am as a person. “I’m not weak. I’m strong. I’ve learned that. I’ve gotten a new confidence in myself that I didn’t have for a long time,” stated Anthony.
Reach Counseling was such a gift. “I don’t know if it’s because I’m a man, and it’s more difficult for men to face this stuff, but I want everyone to know it’s not as scary as you think.” He said. While everyone’s healing process is unique, Anthony said that opening up in a safe, and trusting environment made a night and day difference. “The great work of Reach Counseling Services is helping individuals like me achieve unseen potential and help heal deep wounds.”
“Thanks for allowing me to share my story.”
